Overview
Lightshift and Groton Electric Light Department partnered to complete the first of two battery energy storage system projects. Groton 1 is located directly in the fence line of a GELD substation, where the 3MW battery strengthens grid resilience through peak shaving during times of high demand. This partnership allowed GELD to access the benefits of battery energy storage by using Lightshift’s alternative project financing.
Project Benefits
Part of a two-phase approach, this project works in tandem with Groton 2 to deliver a combined $10 million in savings for the community. The system addresses two critical needs: reducing costs when power is most expensive and lowering the town's carbon footprint by limiting fossil fuel use during times of peak demand.

Beyond the Grid
For the Groton 1 and 2 projects, Lightshift donated $10,000 to the local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes, which provides nutritious groceries and resources to hundreds of families annually.
These energy storage systems will help the town and Groton ratepayers save money when power is the most expensive as well as lower the Town's carbon footprint.
